Opportunity Is Everywhere, Can You See It?

Opportunity is all around us just waiting to be found. In order to find it, you must open your eyes and be ready for it to appear. You have to be willing to walk away from what you already know and are comfortable with in order to pursue and see it. If you won’t allow yourself to be ready then it will never come knocking on your door. You will be blinded to it and stay the same. I think a lot of people are so stuck in the past or with what they already know that they won’t allow themselves to see anything new. They dispel opportunity from themselves. Finding opportunity means you must be willing to seek it out and ready to act fast when it comes to you. You can’t just wait for opportunity to find you. You must make your own opportunity.

One of my favorite authors, Orison Swett Marden, once said: Our thoughts and imagination are the only real limits to our possibilities. If you won’t allow yourself to see great possibility in our world, then how will you ever find it? Open your eyes and be ready. It’s right before waiting on you to see it in a new light.

Why Settle In Life, Business Or Relationships?

Why do we settle? Is it for fear that we may not reach great heights? Perhaps a lack of conviction in our ability to succeed? Why do we allow ourselves to accept less than what we are worth? Is it that we believe that we do not deserve to have the best that there is in the world?

I saw something amazing today. It was an old couple holding hands. A rare find today. There was something there though, which I couldn’t help but notice. The man looked like he still had the hots for her. And her, she looked like she was the happiest woman on the planet. They had this look in their eyes that was just incredible to see. Passion. Love. It made me smile. Driving home, I thought to myself, wow. Why don’t more people find relationships like that? I think in today’s world, people settle for a lot less. We settle for security. We stay in relationships when we have better prospects that could make us happier. We don’t leave a job when we hate it. We never start that business or act on our great ideas or opportunity.

Why choose to settle for something you don’t really want in the first place? At what point do we let go and justify something less than our true desires? It got me wondering, why is it that people don’t believe that they can have the best that there is in the world?

We all have a choice. We can accept the status quo or be the ones to set the bar where we truly want. Every time we settle for less a piece of ourselves die with it. Our true desires are not fulfilled. You may learn to accept where you are, but inside you will always have a longing for more and it will slowly eat away at your soul until you act on it.

The most secure place on the planet is a prison cell, but the problem is that it is just that, a prison. You are behind bars, held back and aren’t free to reach your true desires. You won’t find that person that is truly right for you, you’ll settle for someone that doesn’t make you feel fully alive. You won’t start that business idea you had, and it will sit lonely locked away in your mind’s attic collecting dust. If our history’s great leaders had settled, would anything great ever been accomplished?

If you really want to be happy you can’t settle for less. Another great quote: “learn to say no to the good to allow room for the great.” Learn to not accept mediocrity and shoot for great heights. Don’t settle. Follow your heart.

It is out there; you just have to have enough patience to find it.

Streamline Your Business

I used to work for a company as an assembly technician that built filters. In the process, there was one step, that involved hand drilling these pieces of metal. Hand drilling, not an easy quick task. Imagine screwing in a screw with no drill into metal for 8 hours straight. To go through one of these things it took about 2-3 minutes a piece. So what did I do? I found a way to use a drill to replace hand drilling. Now, it took about 5 seconds per piece with much more precision than I could by hand. I could do what I did in a days work before, now in the matter of a few hours. I increased production and got more done on the bottom line. That’s streamlining. Interestingly enough, the manager stopped me from using the drill. They said that wasn’t the way they were instructed to do it. So you want me to hand drill these and take 24 times the amount of time it took me to do one with a drill? Seriously? There was no real technical answer he could give me as to why I should hand drill these. He said: “that is just how it had always been done.” It made no sense. I went back to work and got hand drilling. I couldn’t understand why this mattered. I left the company and found out that a few months later they employed drills to do the work. Imagine the dollars that had been wasted. Months of hand drilling that could have been replaced with drills. Had this company not looked at its processes, it might still be wasting money paying extra workers to hand drill these filters.

As a business owner you need to question everything. Look at your processes, your workers and see if you can find ways to streamline them. Look for innovation, and opportunity. You never know when you will find ways to increase your profits or your bottom line. Simple changes can bring big results. Simply using a drill cut production times drastically. Build a system to make things work more smoothly and faster. You may be leaving extra money on the table without one. Don’t simply trust that your employees will build and do something better. Remember they don’t have skin in the game like you do. They are not an entrepreneur spending their own marbles, they are an employee often just doing their job description.

Where can you streamline your business?

What Do You See? Manure Or Gold?

If you were driving along and saw this sign what would you think? A pile of manure or gold? It’s all in the eye of the beholder. Are you the kind of person that sees something like this and thinks… huh… I wonder what I could create from that?

Once there was a guy who did stop and saw gold. He asked around and ended up meeting a contractor that wasn’t going to use a plot of dirt and manure. He negotiated a deal for hauling it away for free for the contractor. The guy then turned around and sold it for $25,000! He made a chunk of money off manure! Something that most people would never think anything of. He kept his eyes open for opportunity. Are you keeping a watch out for opportunity? Or are you caught up and shutting it out?

The truth is that we see signs like this everyday. Opportunities are all around us. They are there staring us in the face. They just aren’t so bold most of the time. How many opportunities have you passed up? How many decisions could you have made to truly build something great? Start looking at things from different angles you never know when an opportunity could lead to something huge for you and your life.
