The Supression Of Genius

I recently read an incredible study that focused on divergent thinking as we progress through life. Divergent thinking is original and creative thinking. It’s thinking outside the box. The study found:

98 percent of children between the ages of three and five scored in the genius category for divergent thinking. Between the ages of two and ten, that number drops to 32 percent. By the time the kids become teenagers, it drops to 10 percent. And only 2 percent of those by the age of 25 scored in the genius category for divergent thinking.

WOW. Pretty interesting results. Gordon Mackenzie, in his book, Orbiting the Giant Hairball, talks about a situation he faced when speaking at schools. He would ask various age groups a question, “How many of you are artists?” In first grade, all of the kids would jump from their seats and wave their arms wildly with excitement. Every child was an artist. Second grade: half the kids would raise their hands, but would do so calmly. Third: only one third of them. And so on through the grades. By sixth grade, only one or two kids would raise their hands. Their eyes would glance side to side uneasily worried about being identified as a closet artist and what others would think.

What happened? Where did our creativity go? And further, why? When we were kids, the world was open and anything was possible. We all wanted to become astronauts, artists, superheroes and start businesses doing what we loved. Somewhere along the way, something changed. When did our great dreams change to sitting behind a desk in a cubicle doing work we hated, with people we hated, for people we hated?

What is happening here? What sinister forces are suppressing the creative genius inside each of us? Do you think that this might have something to do with why people don’t follow their dreams? I would love to know your thoughts on this! Please comment. I’ll be posting my thoughts in my next post!

The Great Ones

http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/digg_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/reddit_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/stumbleupon_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/delicious_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/technorati_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/facebook_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/yahoobuzz_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/twitter_48.png

Recently, I had a conversation with a friend about how they believed that our world was corrupt by evil greedy business owners that take advantage of the little guy. They thought that it was time that the business owners “get what is coming to them,” that it was time they quit taking from those below them.

It was disheartening. They didn’t understand how the quality of their life was dependant on that of a business owner. Where would they be without their boss? You see, I believe that business owners are the most honorable ones out there. They are the great ones that are the motor of our world that advances us forward. Most people don’t understand the power behind that. Instead they blame and demonize them. Think of all the products, services and luxuries that you enjoy on a daily basis. All of those were once merely an idea inside one of our great one’s minds. It was made possible by them.

When you work for any company, you are not only paid your wage for your labor, but also for the productive genius behind the scenes that makes your job possible. I think most people forget the intellect that goes into creating and running a business. It takes the great work of the business owner who slaves and slaves in order to build the process and concept of their business. It takes the money from the investor who risks losing it all on an idea that is unproven. It takes the engineer and scientists who design and come up with the technology for new worlds to be explored. It takes a lot of intellect that most people fail to even realize. Instead they are ungrateful. They blame. They feel “victimized by the man.”

Without our great ones where would the world be? It is because of the great entrepreneurs that our world has advanced as far as it had. Every idea or creation all stemmed from the productive genius of a business owner or inventor. Any person that is employed, has a job because a business owner created that job for them. They slaved, risked, beat incredible odds and failed until they managed to build something great that provided that job for you. Without the business owner they would live like third world countries do, fighting for every dime with little progression. It is because of our great ones that we are allowed to enjoy the quality of life that we do. They should not be damned, but rather thanked. Daily.

“Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” – Steve Jobs

I wish the world would wake up and realize who the real great ones are. They should be treated like the celebrities that they are. Their genius should be celebrated, not demonized.

A lady once hired a plumber to come and fix her sink. He walked right up to it and banged the pipe and turned a knob until the clog was fixed. He promptly handed the lady a bill after about 2 minutes of work. “$105! Why all you did was bang the pipe and turn a knob! I want a breakdown of why this is so expensive.” The lady exclaimed angrily. The plumber smiled and said, “It’s $5 for banging the pipe and turning the knob. It’s $100 for knowing where to bang.”

I think in business sometimes we forget the value of our genius. What I mean by this is that you are an expert in your field. You obtain knowledge that others lack. You have been to the seminars, bought the books and spent the countless hours honing your skills. Through trial and error you have figured it out. That knowledge is years in the making and you spent your time and money to obtain it.

In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.

You shouldn’t cheapen that knowledge by losing sight at it’s worth. You were the one who spent years learning. You faced trials and hardships to get there. Your experience is extremely valuable to someone who needs to get where you already are or know what you know. I think sometimes we allow others to pick and prod our genius out of us. We allow them to take from us what we have spent years learning. LET ME BE CLEAR: I am not saying we shouldn’t help others get where they are trying to go. I am a firm believer that if you help enough people get what they want, then you will eventually get what you want. I believe professionals should exchange ideas and help one another. I just want you to be aware and guard your genius. I want you to realize the value behind your knowledge when others don’t respect what you went through to obtain it.

Don’t cheapen your genius.
