The other day, I attended a seminar where the speaker, multimillionaire Blake Mallen, said:
“You are either politicking or producing, but you can’t be doing both.”
Gossip or politics doesn’t get you any closer to your goals. Most of the time it keeps you from taking action and doing any real work. If you look at most true producers and achievers, they simply don’t have time, nor the desire to be apart of it. They are to busy creating value and taking steps towards advancement to care about whose dating who, or “showing” everyone how successful they are.
There are a lot of organizations where people get so caught up in the water-cooler gossip that they never produce any results in the process. They may be “in the know” or part of the “in” crowd, but usually no real production occurs from it. If you want to go after your goals, you must produce and leave the gossiping to the others that don’t really want success. What kind of a return does the drama between Sue and Charles produce? How closer to your goals does running around keeping up appearances get you? What money is made from gossip or politics?
You can either be politicking or producing, but you can’t be doing both. Me… I’d rather have the results.

Most everyone has this vision for where they want to go in life. We all have dreams and aspirations. However, there is something that can hold you back from them. It’s your level of comfort. You have this comfort zone that you know and are familiar with. Perhaps it’s how you always have done things. Your personal level of comfort will determine what you do and how far you will go in life. How is your level of comfort working out for you? Are you getting everything you want? Or simply staying where you were last year and the year before that?
If you truly want to get what you have always wanted, you have to do something you have never done. You have to step outside your comfort zone and try new strategies. Einstein once said the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. How can you have different results if you refuse to try new experiences? Without innovation, no progress is ever made. The greatest enemy to human potential is your comfort zone.
If you don’t step outside your level of comfort, you’ll never get anything different out of life, you’ll simply stay the same. It requires change in behaviors, actions and your thoughts to achieve new results. If you look at the greatest accomplishments of our world, they all were risks. The great achievers and doers had to step outside that comfort zone and take that chance. Try something new today. Take that risk. Are you willing to step outside yours to move towards your goals? Or do you want to stay the same?

Do you want to improve your life and success? One place to start is with your health. I am a firm believer that your health plays a huge part in your success. If you are unhealthy, how can you possibly succeed? You won’t have the energy you need to get what needs to be done, finished. You may be focused on other health issues rather than your goals. You won’t have as much determination and discipline to seek your wants and desires. You might get sick more often and have to take time away from your goals to get well. Healthy and fit people are seen as confident, determined and capable. Hate to say it but people that are unhealthy and overweight get treated far differently than those that are fit. Those that are fit are respected much more. When you are healthy you feel better, look better, can think faster and handle stress much better than when you aren’t. Your confidence level will soar. One trait of every successful person I know is that they are immensely confident in themselves. You cannot have true abundance in ANY area of your life without first feeling immensely confident in yourself. The main determining factor in your confidence is how you feel about your body. If you look at high achievers they all are immensely confident in themselves. A lot of this confidence comes with being happy with their bodies. You cannot have a healthy mind without a healthy body.
You can’t change the fact that others will treat and listen to people that are healthy more so than those that are unhealthy and unfit. What you can change is you. When you get in shape, your whole appearance changes. Your confidence level rises, you appear to have much more authority than before. You’ll have more energy to get things done. You’ll stay more motivated and disciplined in other areas of your life as well. All around your whole dynamic changes. If you want success, take the step to improve your health. You’ll be amazed at what it will do for all areas of your life. One way I have found you can easily do this is with the Body By Vi Challenge. It’s a fun 90 day health challenge to improve your health, lose weight and feel great. Most achievers don’t have the time to do crazy workouts, or make all their meals at home. They simply don’t have the time. Most people don’t want to lose weight by drinking crazy green substances that you have to hold your nose just to get down. Achievers need something quick and simple that tastes great. For me, Body By Vi was a great solution. I don’t have to count carbs or eat meals that taste like cardboard. I simply replace a meal a day with a shake. Simple. Easy. Fun. Tastes awesome. You can find out more about it at www.upforchallenge.net. Your health is your greatest asset. Without it, how can you possibly succeed? However you decide to get healthy, make the investment in yourself. Your success will thank you.

Some people simply don’t want to be saved by you. In the beginning, they may act like they want change, but the truth is that they have to figure it out and do it on their own. You simply can’t do it for them. As an entrepreneur that has learned the power and rewards of starting my own business, when I see a friend that wants more in their life, I instinctually want to do whatever I can to help them. I will encourage them that they can achieve whatever they want to. I remember the days when I had no support and what it was like to battle great odds alone. It’s a hard road to go down without the positive support that you need. I wish I had found mine much earlier. Probably would have made things a lot easier.
I will tell these people to go out and create their own life. That they can do anything they set their life to. I am such a firm believer in the power of human potential that I know anyone despite where they are in life, can become a success if they simply have the passion and determination to do it. But I have also found that they have to do it for themselves. It doesn’t matter how hard you try, you can’t do it for them. No power on earth can help the person that has no belief in themselves or the true desire for change. They have to reach their own personal boiling point that says, “Ok, I’m not going to live like this anymore. Time to change things up.”
As my business partner puts it, “You can give them the hammer, but they are going to have to swing at the nails.” It has to be their decision to change and no one else. Otherwise they will stay the same regardless of how much help or support you give them. There is something deep inside that keeps them from advancing. Until they discover it and fight like hell to defeat it, they will not change. The only thing you can do for them is to encourage and be there for them and hope that they will find it in themselves. They have to truly want it inside. I have the tendency to want to jump up and try to be the hero for them. I have learned that no matter what you do or say you can’t save them. They have to save themselves.
“I have come to understand that success and prosperity had almost nothing to do with opportunities, chance, luck – or even training, education, or skill. It had everything to do with your personal consciousness, beliefs, and even subconscious programming that you aren’t aware of.” – Randy Gage.

I got a sad email today from a person who believed that I shouldn’t encourage everyone that they can achieve anything they want. They believed that some people simply don’t have it in them to be successful. They asked: “How are you going to believe that Tom that works in a factory, broke and without a good education is going to succeed?” My answer: I see it everyday. Most all of my entrepreneur friends came from nothing. No rich uncles to pass down wealth, they didn’t have the genius of Steve Jobs. Heck half of them never went to college! They are regular everyday people that went after their goals and succeeded. Pessimists are the great destroyer of our world. They see the bad side in everything. They view the world through grey colored glassed and never see a brighter future. They neglect to ever take chances or try new things because they are live in a world of fear. Pessimists are also some of the starkest critics and hate to see someone to succeed. When someone succeeds they have something to compare their own mediocre lives to. Have you ever met a successful pessimist? I doubt it.
I am a firm believer that inside every person there lies a king. To a few, this king is full of life with the world within its grasp. In others, it lies dormant just waiting to be unleashed. I believe we all have it inside of us to become something incredible. If we could only discover it within ourselves, then our possibility could be endless. However, it’s us that must make the decision of whether or not to search for it.
I believe that no matter who you are, where you were born, what your parents were like, what your circumstances are, there is only one limit on your entire future, YOU. One of my favorite authors and mentor, Mark Qualm puts it this way: If you permit life to walk over you, or worse, just pass you by, you deserve it. You are not a helpless pawn, at the mercy of forces out of your control. You are exactly the opposite. You are you, and only you can CREATE your future. Do not let life happen to you, create the life you deserve.
We live in a world with limitless opportunity. It’s out there, you just have to find it by letting out your inner king. I have personally seen the most undereducated, poorest people find riches and success. They aren’t superhuman, they didn’t have advantages, they simply saw a better world for themselves. They let out their inner king. Recently, I met with Ryan Blair for dinner. Ryan is a serial entrepreneur, multimillionaire that came from nothing. His father was a drug addict, sisters and brothers were in and out of jail. He had ZERO advantages. Yet he saw something more in himself. He let his inner king. Inside of you is the ability to become anything you want. You just have to let it out.

If you want to get where you want to go, you have to Dump Your Duds. Your duds are clients, people and friends that are going to hinder your success or keep you from moving forward. They might be close friends, family members or even your old fraternity or sorority members. It’s anyone that does not encourage you to become more. This was something I have had to learn the hard way. I held on to for a long time to my duds thinking they were my friends. Truth be told they really weren’t. They were encouraging me not to do something worthwhile and it took me along time to realize it.
In my opinion, a true friend wants to see you succeed. They encourage you to become great. They want to see you become more. It took me a while to see that my duds didn’t want this for me. They didn’t want to see me succeed. They wanted me to stay the same or worse, fail (some even attempted to sabotage my results). Hugh Macleod puts it this way, “Great ideas alter the power balance in relationships. That’s why great ideas are initially resisted.” You will become like the people you spend the most time with. Do you want what they have? If you don’t, then you need to surround yourself with people that have what you want. Do your friends encourage you to be the best you can be? Or give you permission to stay the same? I don’t spend time with those people anymore. I surround myself with folks that want to see me become great. They encourage me to become more than I am. And I do the same for them. It has made a huge difference in my life and my results. Do this: Write down everyone you spend the most time with. Are they positive towards your goals, or negative? It’s time to dump your duds.
There are two types of people, anchors and motors. You want to lose the anchors and get with the motors because the motors are going somewhere and are having more fun. The anchors just pull you down. – Wyland
You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. – Jim Rohn

It seems a lot of people are looking for the easy button for their lives. They want to hit a button and have their lives instantly fulfilled overnight. I hate to break it to you but there is no easy button to achieve greatness in anything. To get where you want to go it’s going to take work. Serious hard work. I think Americans see musicians and actors all of the sudden pop up out of nowhere and become famous and wealthy. They think that it can be done instantly. What we don’t see is the years of hard work that got them to that tipping point that they broke over. All achievers put in hard work into getting there. There was some magical chant or potion that made them that way, they simply put in the time to get where they wanted to go.
Dan Kennedy has a great quote: “I’m an overnight success after 20 years.”
If it took you 5 years to achieve all of your dreams would it be worth it to dedicate that time? Of course! There is another saying I live by: “I will dedicate the next few years of my life towards achieving my goals so that while others have to work to survive, if I choose to I can be permanently lazy.” If you want to be successful in anything, put in the time. Make the dedication. As with most things in life, you get what you put in. Put in the work and time, you’ll get there. Don’t put in the time, you won’t get much in return.

Time is one of our most precious assets. It’s a limited resource that no matter what we do, you can never get lost time back. Once a minute has passed, it’s gone forever. Time is what can determine your success or failure. Just about everyone I know claims they don’t have enough time in the day. Yet how is it that high achievers with ten thousand times more stress and responsibilities are able to get more accomplished in a single hour with the same amount of time as a homeless person with no responsibility? We all have the same amount of time. We each get 24 hours in a day. No more. No less. Your results in life are dependent on what you do with your time. Do you spend your time watching countless hours of television? Or do you read a book that can better yourself? Do you spend all of your time going out on the town and being hungover the next day, or do you put in the time to accomplish a step towards your dreams? One of my mentors, Dan Kennedy has a great quote:
The degree to which you achieve peak productivity – will determine your success.
You can never buy more time. Time is a priceless commodity. You only get 24 hours in a day, but you can reallocate your time. You can change your habits to gain more time for what you need to accomplish. The other day I was talking with a man that claimed he had no time to do anything different. I asked him to walk me through his day. He got up at 5 and watched the news, drank coffee, read the newspaper then went to work until 5ish, then had to eat supper. By then, he was so tired from work from earlier he had to rest a bit and usually watched the news again. Then he would visit with the family, work a little on projects, watch TV and take care of what the kids had going on like sports and homework. By that time the day was gone. He had no free time he claimed. I noticed two problems with his theory. His watching the news and television was sabotaging his results. 3 plus hours a day to be exact. Better yet, he watched the same news broadcast twice in one day! If he only paid attention to the news once a day for no more than one hour, he would free up 2 hours a day. That adds up to 730 hours a year equally a total of 30 full days. A whole month over the course of a year was spent watching the news that he had already seen earlier that morning. Wow. A full month he was missing out on by simply watching less news and reallocating that time towards his goals. If you want to get where you want to go, you have to audit your time. Make a list each day and write down exactly what you did. I’m sure you can find things to cut out or make more productive. If you audit your time and become more productive, you have a much higher chance of success.
