Cage MatchI about I got into a fight to the death with an ad rep for a client yesterday. Why? Because ad reps are not marketers and they attempt to give you unwanted bad advertising advice. I do not mean any offense to any ad rep that does know what they are doing, but many know absolutely nothing about marketing. Many have never studied, created or done ANY advertising themselves. They have not been knee deep in the trenches of entrepreneurship like we have. They do not know what it is like to struggle and risk everything for a dream. They haven’t spent their own marbles for advertising instead of things they needed personally like so many of us have. This is incredible to me because these are the same people who are advising countless small business owners on their marketing. Many are just salesmen that “do the marketing or graphic design.” They have done zero marketing themselves and are not required to know tactics, strategies, case studies, response rates, industry data and research (the list goes on for days…) before they give advertising advice. They couldn’t tell you which fonts increase readership, they can’t show you proof for what they are telling you. They just give their opinion without any reason whatsoever and many people follow what they tell them. It’s the blind leading the blind.

Remember the ad rep for a popular local magazine I was talking about earlier? This is no joke, she tried to tell me to take out my offer, copy, coupon, testimonials, headline and other marketing tactics and to just leave a logo, website and address for a two page ad because she thought “those tactics don’t work.” (PLEASE NOTE: I DIDN’T ASK FOR HER ADVICE IN THE FIRST PLACE). This ad rep was advising me to take away the very tactics that convince people to come into the business! These tactics have been proven to work for something like 200 years and this ad rep thinks they don’t work? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? HOW SCARY IS THIS? This is a lady that is advising numerous local businesses on their marketing!!! The truth is that most ad reps simply do not know any better. They do not know what it takes to get a customer.

99% of advertising doesn’t sell much of anything. — David Ogilvy (Founder Of Ogilvy & Mather Advertising Agency.)

I want you to stop for a moment and ask yourself: What is the REAL reason you advertise?

The bottom line reason you advertise is to get people to act. To make money. It’s not to be pretty, modern, funny or entertaining. It’s not to get people to “Wow, great ad.” It’s simply to make money and get more business. You want your advertising to persuade people to whip out their credit cards and slap it on the counter right then. Branding, being funny, creating buzz and being creative is great and all, but the red line is that you simply want customers to pay for your stuff as quickly as possible. That’s what matters isn’t it? You can have all the buzz in the world but if it doesn’t produce any money in return then it’s completely worthless! Focus your advertising on getting a direct response. Remember the purpose of your marketing and advertising: TO GET PAYING CUSTOMERS not getting “buzz” or to win awards. You want to be able to say, because of this ad, it brought X amount in return, If you can’t do this with a form of advertising, then don’t do it and dedicate the money somewhere else where you can. And for you sake, when dealing with ad reps: ask freaking questions. Ask them why they are advising you to do something. Ask for proof. Don’t just take their word for it because “they have found that —– (insert crap here)—– to be true. Make em’ prove it with real examples.

A few days ago I was having trouble deciding what to carve into the pumpkin this year for Halloween. I wanted something entirely epic to do but just flat out couldn’t decide. So I put out a blast on twitter, that if they would give me some good ideas, I’d carve the best into my pumpkin. Got some interesting answers. The winning idea was none other than to carve Chuck Norris. Me and my friend Alyssa, went to town on it and I gotta say we were pleased with the results. Thanks for all who contributed! Happy Halloween!

Here are the results:

Is Fear Paralyzing You?

http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/digg_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/reddit_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/stumbleupon_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/delicious_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/technorati_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/facebook_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/yahoobuzz_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/twitter_48.png

freddy_kruegerI want you to stop for a moment and ask yourself: What is fear?

Here is a great quote:

What is fear? It is absolutely nothing. It is a mental illusion. There is no reality behind it. It is to the sane adult what the ghost is to the child. There is not one single redeeming feature about fear or any of it’s numerous progeny. It is always, everywhere, an absolute curse. Although there is no reality in fear, no truth behind it, yet everywhere we see people who are slaves to this monster of the imagination. -OSM.

Fear is everywhere among us. Throughout life we are afraid of possible disappointments and mistakes we might make. We are afraid of what our enemies could do, afraid of potential poverty, afraid of what others will think, afraid of our parents, teachers and looking stupid to our peers. We are afraid of rules and regulations. We are afraid of failure. Ever since our childhood, we have grown up in a world of fear. Watch out for this, don’t touch that, you could get cut or burned. If we don’t do this, then something terrible is going to happen. Remember the panic and fear around Y2K? In many cases we are in a constant state of anxiety, paralyzed by fear.

Really stop and ask yourself: what is fear really? It is nothing more than the mere creations of our own imagination.

Fear is one of the leading causes for failure. Fear crushes our hopes, dreams and kills our courage. Fear grabs creativity by the throat and strangles it. Fear handicaps our individuality and ambitions. Many people out there are so fearful of failure or ridicule that they may fail that they never begin. How many of us are so handicapped by our own fear of failure that we rob ourselves of our future? I am good friends with a girl who is so scared her parents would disapprove of her that she would not change her major back in college. She is stuck in a career choice now that she despises, but is still too scared of them to switch. She is a grown woman! What kind of a life is that? She will go on throughout life miserable all because of fear.

If only we could remove our fear of failure from our society, imagine the innovation that could be within our grasp. Imagine the growth! Our world would jump forward leaps and bounds! No longer could dreams be held hostage by fear inside our imaginations, but rather set free for our heart’s ambition. We must conquer our fears if we want to move forward towards our goals.

Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.– Shakespeare.

It’s Time For A Call To Arms…

http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/digg_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/reddit_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/stumbleupon_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/delicious_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/technorati_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/facebook_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/yahoobuzz_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/twitter_48.png

braveheartI want to start this post with some alarming statistics from a recent study:

1 in 3 high school students fail to graduate on time.

Only 50% of African Americans and hispanics graduate on time if at all.

Fewer than 30% say they have the life skills they needed to succeed.

Fewer than 65% have to motivation to achieve.

Is this not sickening to you? I look around at the youth of today and it saddens me. What happened to their work ethic and pride? When did we specifically learn goal setting or being creative? Who taught motivation? Where was following your dream 101? Who taught us about being smart with money? One could argue that they do teach it, but obviously with stats like 1 in 3 fail to graduate in time, something isn’t working.

Right now I’m calling you to arms. To stand up, take action and invest your knowledge and time into our young people’s future. We must teach them to strive to be the best they can be. We cannot live our lives like it ends with us. We must educate our young ones to be the best they can be. To strive for greatness.

If we do not believe in the next generation, it will plateau or become extinct. — Kevin Clark

I want to give you another alarming statistic: 85% of students with success skills graduate. Wow. 85%! If we teach them what we know than we can drastically improve our world. We must let them in on our success secrets. We must educate them on motivation and following their dreams.

Saw this in a brochure at my church: There is one thing we all have in common: that we will all die someday. The question we must ask ourselves is: will it matter when we are gone? Will the impact of your life stop when you breathe your last breath? Or will the impact of your life resonate for generations to come?

Whose life will you have touched? What legacy will you leave behind for others?

otto2I love history and learning about our great leaders, innovators and producers of the past. Here’s a few from this month:

October 23
1877 A patent for a gas-motor engine was issued to Nicolaus Otto, and Francis and William Crossley.

October 24
1836 Alonzo Phillips patented a friction match.
1861 The first transcontinental telegraph system was completed, making it possible to transmit messages rapidly (by mid-19th-century standards) from coast to coast.

October 26
1928 The novel “Peter Pan” by James Barrie was copyright registered.

October 27
1992 Nintendo of America copyright registered the configuration of its hand-held game machine.

October 28
1879 William Lincoln was issued a patent for a lamp.

October 29
1955 Warner Brothers copyright registered the movie “A Rebel without a Cause” starring James Dean.

October 30
1888 A patent for a ballpoint pen was received by John Loud.

October 31
1961 Patent #3,003,667 was granted to Edward Aguado of St. Louis, MO, for an “airway for artificial respiration.”

When can I add your creations to the list?

You Are The Best There Is.

http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/digg_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/reddit_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/stumbleupon_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/delicious_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/technorati_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/facebook_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/yahoobuzz_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/twitter_48.png

intimidationI will never forget the day I started my first business, Urge Marketing. I was working as a server for a restaurant while finishing college. While my guests were happy and during my breaks, I would read business and success books. One day my boss, Dale came up to me and picked up the book I was reading (Inc and Grow Rich… great book about incorporation by the way), and said “Whose book is this?” I told him it was mine. He laughed at me and said, “You’ll never be a business owner, you are a nothing but a server, you idiot. What makes you think that you can run a business?” Due to this and a few other factors, I never went back there to work. That night with nothing but a whopping $100 in my pocket and a dream I started Urge Marketing and have been doing it ever since.

In your path to success, you must realize that you are just as good, worthy and valuable as anyone else. Never let anyone intimidate you into not going further with your goals. Not the Dales or even the biggest successes out there. No matter what kind of car they drive, what their business card says, how much money they make or how big their house is. No one is better than you. You are the best there is.

You have all the ammunition you need to create something massive right inside that head of yours. You have the potential to do, be, or have anything you desire. No one has more than that. Some may have progressed farther down the path at this moment, but that doesn’t make them any better than you. If you start to take action right now, you will be working your way down that same path to greatness. No matter what anyone says, or does, no
matter what your situation is -personal, financial, social or otherwise- you can create your life in your own way. And there is no greater success than that. But you must be the one to achieve your success. Though no one can hold you back if you’re determined enough, by the same token no one can do it for you. If you want to build your house of success, you’ll have to pick up the hammer and start swinging. You’ve got to step up to the challenge, believe in yourself, and do what it takes. Right now is a great time to start. You deserve the best that life has to offer. Do whatever needs to be done to make it happen.

hospital bedNot too long ago, I spent a few hours visiting a friend at the hospital. I noticed how the doctors gave her a prescription to take elsewhere to fill. Why is it that doctors haven’t figured out to put a pharmacy right smack inside the hospital? All day long they are writing prescriptions, why not sell the medicine too? The customers are right there ready to buy them. In fact, it’s even a hassle for them to go elsewhere to fill it. Why don’t they have a pharmacy or even put in something like a redbox medicine vending machine? Makes absolutely no sense. Doctors are literally letting money skip right out the front door!

But what about you? What are you letting skip out the front door? I am amazed at the amount of businesses that do not expand their horizons and add additional services, products or upgrades to their core businesses. You have related services and products that your customers are seeking and currently buying from. Why not expand and cash in on that market too? Your customers already like, trust and have purchased from you. It’s an easy sale! So what could you do for your business? You find other services or products that relate to your business and create new revenue from them. Not sure where to begin?

Lets jump back to the hospital to show you an example. If I owned that place, I would have a pharmacy/store that the patients had to walk through in order to leave the building. I would make it to where it seemed silly or abnormal to go anywhere else to fill that prescription. I’d be selling food and entertainment in the waiting rooms for the family. I might even have a service that families could order delivery of food. What about something like itunes that patients could purchase their favorite TV shows or movies while they recovered in their hospital beds? They have to lay there anyway, why not bring entertainment to them? I would have different levels of treatment patients could purchase and upgrade to. Ever notice how some people will always opt for the most expensive package they can get? Perhaps there would be V.I.P hospital rooms that were well decorated and had personal service for extra fees. I would have rooms or beds families could purchase to stay near their ill family members so they didn’t have to go home. See it’s easy, once you start getting the creative juices flowing.

What additional products or services can you add to your business?
