Are You One Of The Unconquered?

I read an interesting poem today out of the book The Capitalist Spirit, thought you all might enjoy it too.

Invictus By William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

The author, William Ernest Henley contracted tuberculosis of the bone when he was only 12 years of age and had a foot amputated. Despite his illness and disability, he managed to live an active life for over 30 years. This poem entitled Invictus, which means “unconquered” in Latin, was written from a hospital bed during a rough time. I have found that whatever life throws at us, it is us who allows ourselves to accept it and determine how we handle the outcome. We can play victim, blame others all we want or we can choose to move forward and not accept our circumstances. We are either the masters of our environment or the victims. You can be either the lock on or the key to your life. Which one do you want to be?

It seems that a lot of musicians today are using autotune in their songs (autotune basically is used to disguise off-key inaccuracies and mistakes, and has allowed singers to perform perfectly tuned vocal tracks without the need of singing in tune. Some musicians have used it to add new elements to their songs like T-Pain and Lil Wayne). Frankly, I think it’s a big fat pile of junk.

“If you need more than a microphone and a stage you are a punk.” -Frank Sinatra

This quote got me thinking, why have they embraced mediocrity in music? Shouldn’t we applaud the real talent? I think that what make musicians stand out is the fact that they can do something that not everyone else can. I have a friend Tiffany that only needs her own voice with a crowd to listen to her and she can blow the socks off what is out there right now. She is an incredible singer (one day I’ll get a video of her to post for you all).

What happened to the real talent out there in the music world? Why aren’t the talented the ones that are highlighted? What happened to musicians that could actually play an instrument and singers who could actually sing? Anyone can come and throw down lyrics and use autotune to make it sound better. There is nothing great about that though. There is no special talent there that makes them different. So, why do we support it?

Here is a video of Andy McKee and extremely talented musician. All he needs is his guitar.

Real talent is what lasts forever. These autotuned songs may be what is popular now, but I doubt they will ever become timeless. What are your thoughts?

If you haven’t noticed yet, I am a huge Apple and Steve Jobs fan. Above is a really cool video of a commencement speech he did at Stanford.

Stay hungry. Stay Foolish.

I am a firm believer that if you want to be successful at something you need to read as many books on the subject as you can, talk to mentors in your field and constantly immerse yourself into your mission. Jay Walker (Walker Digital, Priceline) has done just this with the construction of his “library of human imagination.” (Really cool idea.) Watch his explanation here. A tip of the hat to you, Jay. What a cool idea.

New life goal: David Bustle’s Library of Human Achievement, Creativity and Entrepreneurship… Coming soon.

I absolutely love this video. It’s an ad from Apple way back in 1997. I thought that it basically summed up my readers better than anything else.

Here is the text version:

Here’s to the crazy ones.einstein-tongue-out
The misfits.
The rebels.
The troublemakers.
The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.
They’re not fond of rules.
And they have no respect for the status quo.
You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.
Because they change things.
They push the human race forward.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones,
We see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think
they can change the world,
Are the ones who do.

So here is a toast to you, readers. You are the imaginative, the creative, the mentally and physically strong, the innovators, the revolutionaries and the creators that push our world forward. Keep on following your hearts and passions. Keep on in your pursuit to build something incredible to give to the world. Show the world who you are and what you are made of.

Put a bullet through the forehead of mediocrity.
