Whatever It Takes.

I spoke with an interesting man today on the phone that gave me a powerful lesson. You must do whatever it takes in order to get where you want to go even if it means doing things you don’t want to do. This man wanted to get started with his own business, but didn’t have the start up cost he needed to get it up and running. Now, he could have whined, cried and blamed his situation. He could have asked for a handout. He could have blamed everything else in his world for him not having what he needed. But he didn’t. He wanted it bad enough to find a way. So he decided to go sell blood (among other things) in order to get what he needed to get started. This guy was deathly afraid of needles, yet he still went through with it. Now that is determination. That is the drive you need. I have no doubt that with a fire inside that heavy, he will succeed in life in whatever he does.

People will give you hundreds of excuses for not following their passions. They don’t have the time. They don’t have the money. They can’t sell. They don’t have the education. Their excuses hold them back. Most simply won’t do what it takes to succeed. I am a firm believer that if you have the drive to do what it takes, anything is possible. There is always an option. There is always a way to move forward. You just have to have the drive.

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

I read a great quote today by Hugh Macloed, my favorite artist on Gaping Void.
“The hunger will give from you everything, and it will take from you everything. It will cost you your life, and there isn’t a damn thing you can do about it. But knowing this of course is what sets you free.”

That quote stayed with me today and wouldn’t let go. I believe we all have this hunger inside of us. The hunger to create, build and aspire to. The hunger to do something impossible and defeat incredible odds. It’s this innate force inside of us that wants to stake claim to our own Mount Everest, start that business venture, write that book and follow our passions. I think it is what makes us tick. This hunger is something that will eat at us until we reach or even fail at our goals. We can’t stop it. It’s impossible. No matter how hard we try, we can’t run from it. It will keep us awake at night dreaming grandiose dreams of bettering our world and fulfilling our dreams. The hunger is what drives us. It’s the fire inside that keeps us going despite what the world throws. The hunger is what built the world we know today. It fueled the great ones and forced them to create, build and explore. It wouldn’t let go of them and it won’t let go of you. It makes you who you are.

You have the hunger inside. And you have two choices: attempt to put out the fire or unleash it. The truth however, is that you won’t be able to put it out. You may be able to minimize the blaze for now, but it will always be there, waiting. It’s going to eat at you until you unleash it to go towards your goals.

Last post I talked at the suppression of genius. There were some really interesting studies that showed that as people get older, they get less creative. Why does this happen? In my opinion, it happens becuase we live in a sea of “No’s.” As we grow up, the pressure is on to become “normal.” We are taught the notion of boundaries. We are taught the meaning of the word “no” all to well. At some point, we are told that we have to hang up superman’s cape and trade it for normalcy. We are told we can’t make a living following our dreams. It seems to me that all over society discourages us to stand up and be creative.

I think it’s time for a creative revolution in our world. We need more folks that aren’t afraid to raise their hands because they are too embarrassed at what others will say. We need to step up and take charge. We need to put a bullet through the forehead of mediocrity. We must teach our kids that it’s ok to follow our passions. That it is ok to be different. Creativity and passions should be celebrated, not discouraged.

If you look at our great leaders of today, just about every single one of them has the story where they came from an environment of people telling them they shouldn’t do what they were trying to do. Rarely do you ever hear of them having cheerleaders on the side saying, you can do it! Their creativity and passions were discouraged at just about every turn. If they had listened, we wouldn’t have the music, art, businesses, concepts and ideas of today. No innovation would occur. If you look at progression in our world, it comes from folks that dare to be different. That stand up and aren’t afraid to raise their hands. They come from people that push limits and follow what they think is right. They close their minds to the rest of the herd out there that discourage them.

Imagine for a moment if people’s passions were encouraged. If our artists, businesses, leaders, achievers and doers were celebrated for their efforts from the beginning, rather than after or if they made it? What great advancements could happen to our world? What new products would be created? Imagine the advancements in all of the various fields out there. I think we need to stop this suppression of creativity. We live in a sea of “No’s.” We must build up those who dare to fight for their passions. It’s time we encourage each other to be great and do great work.

I think there is a desire inside all of us to be accepted. We try to look, talk and think like everyone else. What happens? We become like everyone else. We hide who we are inside, in order to fit in with the herd. We lose what makes us great. Our personality, ambitions and style. We give up our originality so that we can become a carbon copy of what “we are supposed to be” in everyone else’s eyes. Frankly, we do this because we fear others will think we’re nuts. We worry that others will call us crazy.

Me, I refuse to be like everyone else. So go ahead and call me crazy.

In my opinion, if you are afraid of what others will think than you are the crazy one. No one that ever accomplished anything great or worth mentioning, cared what others would think of them. They didn’t wait for society to approve of their cause. They went against the grain. They stood up when no one else would. They risked looking foolish in order to follow their passion. If you look at what society wants you to be, you will never get very far. You have to step outside the box and follow your heart.

Why lose what makes you special? Why give up the things that make you great?

I can tell you why people don’t accomplish great things. It’s because they fear what others will think. That fear rules them and won’t allow them to step up and follow their heart. Too many people look just alike. Societies goal is to make us less crazy and conform us into their little ball. It doesn’t like it when you go outside the lines.

When I look back at my life, those crazy moments when I stood up for what I believed were the great ones. I don’t regret them even If I failed at what I was trying to accomplish.

If you are out there being called crazy, you just might be on the right track.

You can always stop and take the easy route! You can not speak up, color within the lines and sit back follow the rules. That’s what is great about our world, you always have a choice. You have two paths right in front of you. To follow your passion or not. To live a life satisfied, or a life yearning to be fulfilled.

It’s simple to not follow your passion. Our society makes it that way. They discourage you at every front whether you realize it or not. They label you as taboo and you are outcast among friends (Until of course you make it, then everyone and their mother wants to get involved… where were they from the beginning?!?!). If you want the easy route, you don’t have to change much. You just follow that road that was laid out for you. Go to school, get a “good” education, find a safe and secure job. It’s the easy path! Your friends won’t laugh and joke about you when you aren’t around. You won’t have to work harder, you can literally just stay on the course. You won’t have that fear of standing up for something you believe in and how others will respond, you can just sit back and follow the course laid out for you.

However, if you take the easy route you wont be able to make a dent in your world. You won’t have the fulfillment of living your dreams and the adventure that comes along with it. You will always have that feeling inside that yearns for something more and begs to be fed in this endless stage of hunger. It will haunt you at night showing you images and dreams of what could have been. If you take the easy route one day you will wake up and realize you have lived a life of regrets.

Why is it that it takes someone a near death experience to wake up and try to fulfill their life dreams? They go out and try to see places they have never seen, do things they have never done and actually live for once. Why not start living from the beginning? Do you really want to wake up one day with your dreams unfulfilled? Do you really want to be laying on your deathbed to realize your life has been full of regrets and unmet passions?

Are You Holding Yourself Back?

Don't allow your doubts and fears to imprison you.

If you wish to achieve something great with your goals you must erase doubt completely from your mind. As long as doubt stands in front of your ambition, you will not be able to advance further. You must have an unwavering belief in yourself and your ability to succeed. No one can get where they want to go, while inside they believe they can’t get there. It is next to impossible. The philosophy of “I can’t” or “what will others think” will imprison your ability to move forward.

Confidence in your ability and strength can propel you forward to great heights. If you are always talking about business being bad or how there are no opportunities out there for you, then you will be barred from achievement. It will be a fatal condition that will leave you lifeless. Do not allow yourself to think of possible failures for things which you haven’t pursued yet. Turn your back on those thoughts that put up walls in front of you.

Optimism is a success builder; pessimism an achievement killer. Optimisim is the great producer. It is hope, life. Pessimism is the great destroyer. It is despair, death.

As long as your thoughts radiate doubt, you will never advance towards your goals. You must block those thoughts and doubts from your mind. What help are they anyway? Do our doubts and fears do anything for us except lead to endless worry? You must remain confident in your ability to move forward. Show it in what you think and feel. Erase every trace of it from your life. Make up your mind that you will not allow you doubts and fears to hold you back any longer. Imagine how much relief you will feel when your don’t have anything holding you back. Imagine what heights you can reach when your fears no longer keep you imprisoned.

A lady once hired a plumber to come and fix her sink. He walked right up to it and banged the pipe and turned a knob until the clog was fixed. He promptly handed the lady a bill after about 2 minutes of work. “$105! Why all you did was bang the pipe and turn a knob! I want a breakdown of why this is so expensive.” The lady exclaimed angrily. The plumber smiled and said, “It’s $5 for banging the pipe and turning the knob. It’s $100 for knowing where to bang.”

I think in business sometimes we forget the value of our genius. What I mean by this is that you are an expert in your field. You obtain knowledge that others lack. You have been to the seminars, bought the books and spent the countless hours honing your skills. Through trial and error you have figured it out. That knowledge is years in the making and you spent your time and money to obtain it.

In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.

You shouldn’t cheapen that knowledge by losing sight at it’s worth. You were the one who spent years learning. You faced trials and hardships to get there. Your experience is extremely valuable to someone who needs to get where you already are or know what you know. I think sometimes we allow others to pick and prod our genius out of us. We allow them to take from us what we have spent years learning. LET ME BE CLEAR: I am not saying we shouldn’t help others get where they are trying to go. I am a firm believer that if you help enough people get what they want, then you will eventually get what you want. I believe professionals should exchange ideas and help one another. I just want you to be aware and guard your genius. I want you to realize the value behind your knowledge when others don’t respect what you went through to obtain it.

Don’t cheapen your genius.

Find Your Why Again

I hate saying it but many people out there just live a life to merely exist in our world. They just live to get by with their dreams and lives unfilled. For some reason that is enough for them. I truly believe that we should exist for a much bigger reason. We should have a great purpose that inside we MUST fill. Our own individual thing to master, move and stake our claim. Not to just get to next week’s paycheck and to “to get by.” I think life should mean more than that.

Is just getting by living a real fulfilled life? I’m not saying that everyone should go out and build a massive company or do some incredible feat. Greatness can be defined in many ways. I don’t necessarily mean money either. Everyone should however have more of a purpose than to get to the next day. We shouldn’t be living for the weekend. We should work to find our why in life. Our purpose for what we are supposed to do on this planet. Have you ever asked yourself what your why is?

When you were little you had such grandiose dreams of great aspirations. We all wanted to be astronauts and were told to shoot for the stars. We thought we could do or become anything. Somehow along the way, many of us settled for mediocrity. We lost our why and haven’t acknowledged it since. We lost our passion and we settled when we could have soared.

What happened to those dreams of greatness? What happened to our why? What your life is about? What impact do you want to have on our world? How will your life be remembered by those around you? What would they say about your life after you are gone?

Find your why again. Don’t live your life asleep. You don’t want to wake up one day and realize you lost it entirely.

The world is full of dreamers that have been brave enough to dream big dreams in this world of doubt. All of the great innovations and creations have blossomed from our great dreamers. Apple, Disney, and every single one of our great companies all started from nothing more than a dream from one person.

Dreaming big dreams is great, and an important first step in the process to greatness, but the dirty truth is that in order for your dreams to have significance, you must have action too. You must take the steps necessary to make them a reality. I think sometimes we get so caught up in our dreams by thinking about what life will be like one day when we reach a certain level of success, that we lose sight of what it will take to get there. It gives us enough satisfaction to keep us going on and to continue dreaming, but we fail to actually take the action to get us there.

If you really truly want to become great, you cannot simply have a dream or vision. You must combine your vision with venture and action. Vision is not enough. Dreaming is not enough. Dreaming is nothing more than a thought when it is not combined with action. It holds no power and has no force to push it beyond a simple thought. The greatest, coolest, most innovative, ingenious dreams will never become anything without action.

The world is full of people that dream big dreams. That long inside for something better. We have all seen the people who are going to “one day” write that book, or “one day” start that business. The truth is that their dreams will never formulate to more than a dream if they fail to take action. You can spend a lifetime of dreaming and never producing anything. They have not reached that point where they are tired of just holding onto a dream. They need to reach a point where they have that burning desire inside to make it a reality.

I believe you must reach a boiling point inside yourself. That point inside where you become fed up with just dreaming and want to actually make your dreams happen. Where you lose the “one day I am going to be…” and start saying, “today I am going to be.” It’s no longer about “becoming great” it’s about “doing what it takes to get there.”

Real success is never given. It is taken by those with the willpower and the determination to ACT.

Although having dreams are extremely important, they hold no power without action. You have to step out of that dream state and walk through the door. Reach that boiling point inside yourself, where you will stop dreaming and start doing.

The Loss Of A Legend.

rohn_photoYesterday the world lost a great mentor Jim Rohn to Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Although I never met him, Jim has greatly impacted my life over the past few years with his teachings. He challenged me to be my best and inspired me to live my dreams. Jim, you are legendary to me and you will be missed. In honor, here are a few of my favorite quotes from Jim Rohn:

Resolve says, “I will.” The man says, “I will climb this mountain. They told me it is too high, too far, too steep, too rocky and too difficult. But it’s my mountain. I will climb it. You will soon see me waving from the top or dead on the side from trying.”

Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time.

If you learn to set a good sail, the wind that blows will always take you to the dreams you want, the income you want, and the treasures of mind, purse, and soul you want.

I used to say, “Things cost too much.” Then my teacher straightened me out on that by saying, “The problem isn’t that things cost too much. The problem is that you can’t afford it.” That’s when I finally understood that the problem wasn’t “it” – the problem was “me.”

If you don’t like how things are, change it! You’re not a tree. You must get good at one of two things: sowing in the spring or begging in the fall. The soil says, “Don’t bring me your need, bring me your seed.”

Walk away from the 97% crowd. Don’t use their excuses. Take charge of your own life. You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself.

Your paycheck is not your employer’s responsibility, it’s your responsibility. Your employer has no control over your value, but you do.

If you wish to find, you must search. Rarely does a good idea interrupt you.

I find it fascinating that most people plan their vacations with better care than they plan their lives. Perhaps that is because escape is easier than change. If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they may have planned for you? Not much.
