Ask yourself: why does anyone have followers? It’s because they own it. Good leaders let their passion for what they do sweat out of them. You see this flicker in their eyes and you know they have something special about them. They live, breathe and sleep it. You get excited just hearing them talk about it, because they reek of passion. If you want to get somewhere, you also must own it. If you aren’t ecstatic about what you do, why would anyone else be? If you want others to get it, you better let it seep out of your pores.

You must take ownership of your passion.

One of the greatest things about the age we live in, is that opportunity is all around us. If we open our eyes and minds enough to see it, it’s there, ripe for the taking. To become great at anything, you must train yourself to see and act quickly on opportunity when it presents itself.

Opportunity doesn’t wait for you to act, it’s ready now for someone to take hold of it and run. If you wait around, it will move on to someone else. When I was 19, I had an idea for a job website company. Basically, it was youtube mixed with monster.com, mixed with advice on how to get the job you want. On this website, you would be able to search for any job you wanted, and find video interviews, articles and more from experts that already have that job. They would give advice on how to get started, what their experiences were, things to watch out for, what qualifications you needed, and how to get hired etc. It gave you insiders information right there on the internet. Picture having an internship that taught you everything you needed to know, packaged in a nice box with a big fat red bow on top of it, all for a small fee. I saw a much needed opportunity and failed to act on it though (In fact, I let a $20-30,000 a year college career education “expert” give me advice on why I shouldn’t do it).

7 years later… I look back to see that within the last year, a huge company just funded and launched something similar. Damnit, cue knife straight to my heart. I Shoulda, I woulda and I coulda… but I didn’t. My idea was 7 years before another company had the same one and acted. I saw a huge opportunity and didn’t pull the cord. Because of my failure to act, opportunity moved to someone else that was actually ready to run with it.

Opportunity is all around us and there for those with the strength to step up and take ACTION. The world is yours, so take it. Don’t lets fears or doubts make you wait. Waiting rarely accomplishes much. It leaves you no better than you were the day before. You’ll look back and regret not moving forward on it.

Magicians never tell the secrets to their tricks. Once they do, the magic and wonder disappears, and the magician is no longer valid to anyone anymore. He can get replaced by someone cheaper or younger. In business, you can learn a lot from them. To someone that lacks your skill, your knowledge is extremely valuable. They will constantly try to pick and prod it out of you and if you let them, you lose your leverage and power. A lot of people want your knowledge, but they don’t want to do what it takes to get to that point. They want you to do the research, spend the time and test it out first then just give it to them. I wrote about this in an earlier post.

I also wanted to talk about another reason you should safegaurd your knowledge: creating competition. Sometimes people will see your success, and want to duplicate it for themselves. They will come off as a friend, in an attempt to take what you have inside that head of yours. To see what they can pry out of you. In my line of work, often people want to tap into my brain. They know I’ve spent thousands and thousands of dollars and years of time researching and testing tactics or products to find the best. Many try to see what they can get out of me for free. You must be careful not to give too much of your ideas and knowledge away… especially for free. Once you give away the farm, you lose your value and they will take your ideas, use it for themselves and forget you ever helped them. I’ve had to learn that the hard way. When I first started, I would give away too much. Pretty quickly I created competition for myself. You give man a fire, and he’ll burn everything down. I found out that if you create a titan, they will forget they were once merely human with you.

I am a pretty open book to most, but I rarely ever give out my best secrets and knowledge. I will hold back what I know. I may throw out some gems to them to help, but I keep the best locked away inside my head for my business and for my personal clients that hire me.

Never show anyone. They’ll beg you and they’ll flatter you for the secret, but as soon as you give it up… you’ll be nothing to them. – The Prestige

We grow up in a world that is constantly asking for permission to do the things we want to do. In order to drive, you’ll need a license, in order to get a top paying job, we need the education and qualifications. We are constantly needing “permission” to succeed and do what we want. However, to do anything revolutionary, you can’t think like this. If you wait around always seeking permission, you can never do anything great and rarely get much accomplished. You’ll spend months or even years waiting on others to say yes to you.

“Orville Wright never needed a pilots license.” – Gordan McKenzie

I think it’s interesting how people think they need qualifications to start their big idea. I have met tons of friends that want to start a business, but they think they need to go get a fancy MBA before they can move forward. When I first started my business, I had $50 in my pocket (which I spent on brochures and incorporation), no official college degree and a dream for something better (thank God for Bekah who fed me!). I was simply armed with my brain and not much else. If you look at most big business founders, you will also find the same to be true. They don’t have the qualifications, traditional education or permission for their ideas. They lack what the world thinks they need. They simply have desire and drive. They don’t need permission. They don’t need that fancy MBA. They don’t need approval for their ideas. They just start and move forward. Stop seeking permission for your ideas and just get started.

Stay hungry. Stay foolish.

A lot of people can’t stand waiting to fulfill their desires. They want it now, and they want it delivered. We have groomed ourselves to be this way. We live in fast food nation, where you place a call and get a hot pizza in 20 minutes delivered right to your door. The problem is that instant gratification rarely ever leads to outstanding results. You are never going to get 5 star steak delivered to your door in twenty minutes and it taste like it does at the restaurant.

There are no overnight successes in the real world. It takes years of work to truly get where you want to go. Most people can’t stand waiting or putting in the work to get there. It’s probably why most people don’t realize their dreams. They trade security and instant results with these things called jobs, rather than working hard and waiting for potential big wins by following their dreams. I love this video. It’s a study that was done about gratification. Kids were given a choice, they could eat one marshmallow now, or if they waited until the lady returned they could get two. Just by waiting only a few minutes, they could double their rewards! Watch how hard it is for these kids to wait.

Is it really that bad to work hard for a few years so that you can be permanently lazy if you choose to be? If you dedicated just 5 years of your life towards your dreams and realized them, would it worth it to you? Personally, I’d trade 5 years in order to get everything I want, rather than get mediocre results now for the rest of my life.

Undoubtedly, you realize you have competition in your business. There is always someone else trying to out do you and take your customers away. It’s important to know what they are doing with their businesses, but you shouldn’t structure your business around them. A lot of businesses battle each other and are constantly reacting to the competition. When one business offers a special the other runs out and tries to beat it with a better offer. When one company offers a new product or service, another runs out, throws on a new coat of paint, and puts their version out there too. The problem with this is that you start focusing solely on the competition and responding to them rather than doing what matters. Instead of innovating, you start imitating. Real growth and incredible change doesn’t occur when you are constantly responding to the competition. You’ll never do anything revolutionary by creating the the same or a little better than everyone else. Copying leads to mediocre results. Innovation can lead to big wins. When you don’t do things different, there isn’t anything that stands out about you amongst the herd out there. You just blend in with everyone else. Stand above the herd and create something something new. Do something different.

The other day, I attended a seminar where the speaker, multimillionaire Blake Mallen, said:

“You are either politicking or producing, but you can’t be doing both.”

Gossip or politics doesn’t get you any closer to your goals. Most of the time it keeps you from taking action and doing any real work. If you look at most true producers and achievers, they simply don’t have time, nor the desire to be apart of it. They are to busy creating value and taking steps towards advancement to care about whose dating who, or “showing” everyone how successful they are.

There are a lot of organizations where people get so caught up in the water-cooler gossip that they never produce any results in the process. They may be “in the know” or part of the “in” crowd, but usually no real production occurs from it. If you want to go after your goals, you must produce and leave the gossiping to the others that don’t really want success. What kind of a return does the drama between Sue and Charles produce? How closer to your goals does running around keeping up appearances get you? What money is made from gossip or politics?

You can either be politicking or producing, but you can’t be doing both. Me… I’d rather have the results.

Step outside your comfort zone

http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/digg_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/reddit_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/stumbleupon_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/delicious_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/technorati_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/facebook_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/yahoobuzz_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/twitter_48.png

Most everyone has this vision for where they want to go in life. We all have dreams and aspirations. However, there is something that can hold you back from them. It’s your level of comfort. You have this comfort zone that you know and are familiar with. Perhaps it’s how you always have done things. Your personal level of comfort will determine what you do and how far you will go in life. How is your level of comfort working out for you? Are you getting everything you want? Or simply staying where you were last year and the year before that?

If you truly want to get what you have always wanted, you have to do something you have never done. You have to step outside your comfort zone and try new strategies. Einstein once said the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. How can you have different results if you refuse to try new experiences? Without innovation, no progress is ever made. The greatest enemy to human potential is your comfort zone.

If you don’t step outside your level of comfort, you’ll never get anything different out of life, you’ll simply stay the same. It requires change in behaviors, actions and your thoughts to achieve new results. If you look at the greatest accomplishments of our world, they all were risks. The great achievers and doers had to step outside that comfort zone and take that chance. Try something new today. Take that risk. Are you willing to step outside yours to move towards your goals? Or do you want to stay the same?

You Can’t Save Them All

http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/digg_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/reddit_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/stumbleupon_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/delicious_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/technorati_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/facebook_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/yahoobuzz_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/twitter_48.png

Some people simply don’t want to be saved by you. In the beginning, they may act like they want change, but the truth is that they have to figure it out and do it on their own. You simply can’t do it for them. As an entrepreneur that has learned the power and rewards of starting my own business, when I see a friend that wants more in their life, I instinctually want to do whatever I can to help them. I will encourage them that they can achieve whatever they want to. I remember the days when I had no support and what it was like to battle great odds alone. It’s a hard road to go down without the positive support that you need. I wish I had found mine much earlier. Probably would have made things a lot easier.

I will tell these people to go out and create their own life. That they can do anything they set their life to. I am such a firm believer in the power of human potential that I know anyone despite where they are in life, can become a success if they simply have the passion and determination to do it. But I have also found that they have to do it for themselves. It doesn’t matter how hard you try, you can’t do it for them. No power on earth can help the person that has no belief in themselves or the true desire for change. They have to reach their own personal boiling point that says, “Ok, I’m not going to live like this anymore. Time to change things up.”

As my business partner puts it, “You can give them the hammer, but they are going to have to swing at the nails.” It has to be their decision to change and no one else. Otherwise they will stay the same regardless of how much help or support you give them. There is something deep inside that keeps them from advancing. Until they discover it and fight like hell to defeat it, they will not change. The only thing you can do for them is to encourage and be there for them and hope that they will find it in themselves. They have to truly want it inside. I have the tendency to want to jump up and try to be the hero for them. I have learned that no matter what you do or say you can’t save them. They have to save themselves.

“I have come to understand that success and prosperity had almost nothing to do with opportunities, chance, luck – or even training, education, or skill. It had everything to do with your personal consciousness, beliefs, and even subconscious programming that you aren’t aware of.” – Randy Gage.

“If you want to be more, you have to become more.” Jim Rohn

I got a sad email today from a person who believed that I shouldn’t encourage everyone that they can achieve anything they want. They believed that some people simply don’t have it in them to be successful. They asked: “How are you going to believe that Tom that works in a factory, broke and without a good education is going to succeed?” My answer: I see it everyday. Most all of my entrepreneur friends came from nothing. No rich uncles to pass down wealth, they didn’t have the genius of Steve Jobs. Heck half of them never went to college! They are regular everyday people that went after their goals and succeeded. Pessimists are the great destroyer of our world. They see the bad side in everything. They view the world through grey colored glassed and never see a brighter future. They neglect to ever take chances or try new things because they are live in a world of fear. Pessimists are also some of the starkest critics and hate to see someone to succeed. When someone succeeds they have something to compare their own mediocre lives to. Have you ever met a successful pessimist? I doubt it.

I am a firm believer that inside every person there lies a king. To a few, this king is full of life with the world within its grasp. In others, it lies dormant just waiting to be unleashed. I believe we all have it inside of us to become something incredible. If we could only discover it within ourselves, then our possibility could be endless. However, it’s us that must make the decision of whether or not to search for it.

I believe that no matter who you are, where you were born, what your parents were like, what your circumstances are, there is only one limit on your entire future, YOU. One of my favorite authors and mentor, Mark Qualm puts it this way: If you permit life to walk over you, or worse, just pass you by, you deserve it. You are not a helpless pawn, at the mercy of forces out of your control. You are exactly the opposite. You are you, and only you can CREATE your future. Do not let life happen to you, create the life you deserve.

We live in a world with limitless opportunity. It’s out there, you just have to find it by letting out your inner king. I have personally seen the most undereducated, poorest people find riches and success. They aren’t superhuman, they didn’t have advantages, they simply saw a better world for themselves. They let out their inner king. Recently, I met with Ryan Blair for dinner. Ryan is a serial entrepreneur, multimillionaire that came from nothing. His father was a drug addict, sisters and brothers were in and out of jail. He had ZERO advantages. Yet he saw something more in himself. He let his inner king. Inside of you is the ability to become anything you want. You just have to let it out.
