I absolutely love this video. It’s an ad from Apple way back in 1997. I thought that it basically summed up my readers better than anything else.

Here is the text version:

Here’s to the crazy ones.einstein-tongue-out
The misfits.
The rebels.
The troublemakers.
The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.
They’re not fond of rules.
And they have no respect for the status quo.
You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.
Because they change things.
They push the human race forward.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones,
We see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think
they can change the world,
Are the ones who do.

So here is a toast to you, readers. You are the imaginative, the creative, the mentally and physically strong, the innovators, the revolutionaries and the creators that push our world forward. Keep on following your hearts and passions. Keep on in your pursuit to build something incredible to give to the world. Show the world who you are and what you are made of.

Put a bullet through the forehead of mediocrity.

6a00d8341bfef653ef00e54f239b7b8833-640wiI have noticed something very common among my entrepreneur friends: we often feel like the odd man out (Or odd women out, for my lady readers).

I have found that entrepreneurs often have a hard time hanging with their old friends and they feel like they are out of place. We are different. We see the world through a completely different set of lenses than most people. We have different experiences, problems and struggles. We are constantly thinking about different things on top of what others think about. We don’t get to leave it behind or come back next Monday like most people. The books we read and television we watch, to the daily activities we partake in and our lifestyles have all completely changed so dramatically that common ground has been lost. You can’t talk about the things that are the most important to you such as your daily struggles with customers, your victories and experiences. It’s not that you feel superior to your old friends or anything, or that what your friends have to say isn’t valid, it’s just that you have become this new person inside. It’s hard to connect with them in this huge aspect of your life. Your lives are completely different now. This often leads to feelings of becoming the odd man out in your old circles. You have this massive side of you that you feel you can’t share with anyone you care about because they don’t understand or can’t relate to you.

I remember trying to talk about business life with my friends and family. They would just blank stare at me like I was from another planet. They were very important to me, but I felt this huge sense of isolation among them. Their lives were so completely different from my own, it was like being in a crowded room and still feeling lonely.

We entrepreneurs are the odd men out. We are different and are no longer normal to our old friends. It’s like we are from a new world. The problem there is that we have lost our common ground. Our connection has changed because of this new side of us. I have found the secret that will help us manage this: Surround yourself with like minded business owners and professionals that want you to succeed and encourage them to do so as well. Meet with them frequently. If you do this you will gain a new network of individuals that you can celebrate success with and face similar challenges together. You will also gain a vault of experienced information that you can build and profit from. You will be amazed at the differences in your conversations and how fulfilling it can be to talk with someone who is in the same boat as you are. You need that time to share your victories, experiences, trials. Please do not get me wrong here, I’m not saying that you should abandon your family or your friends at all. They are still your family and friends, only you have changed. You need this new network of like minded people to connect with your business side of life that your friends and family cannot fill.

Build a network of folks who are just like you. This way you can bridge this inner gap inside yourself and share your business side with people of like mind. You will be amazed at how refreshing it is.

ross-giantmanDenial of yourself is one of the saddest tragedies of our world today. We have millions of people out there that are holding themselves back by denying their extraordinary ability to accomplish something.

They deny who they are.
They deny who they could become.
They deny their future success.

Right now, there is someone somewhere holding a new invention, a new symphony, a new cure, a new book or a new business idea inside themselves that could revolutionize their industry. We have assistants that should be running companies. There are back up singers that should taking the front stage. However, their self doubt has held them back. They sabotage their success with internal statements like: “I couldn’t do that. I don’t have the education.” Or “I’m not good enough. There are thousands better than me.”

They have denied their inner giant. They have denied their ability. They have told themselves that success is for other people and not them.

You have untold talent right before you. It’s lingering inside of you. Right within your grasp. If you continue to think small, you will remain small. You are capable of doing great things. You have talent inside of you waiting to burst out and carry yourself into greatness. I truly believe that you can do something incredible, if you dedicate yourself to your success. Stop holding yourself back. Stop limiting your own supply.

You have the talent.
You have the knowledge.
You have the ability.

SO USE IT.

Are you denying your inner giant?

angry-teacherI had a teacher once tell me: “Why can’t you just be normal and do the assignment the way it says to do it? You aren’t going to finish in time.” I never was much of your typical follow the directions student during my schooling. I often wanted to do something different. I would try and take an assignment that interested me and make it my own. Create a new experience and learn something that I cared about learning. Sometimes they came out incredible, and others were colossal failures. I may not have finished some projects exactly the way they were supposed to be done all the time and I may have had some belly flops, but the point was that I learned something out of it that was worth it. Every time I went my own way I created a new experience it has influenced me in some fashion. Wouldn’t it be better to do something that interested you that you could better yourself from? Wouldn’t that be better than just do something to pass the given requirements?

The purpose of education is to stimulate the creativity and the passions of the student body. I think we have gotten away from that. It’s not to herd and mold people into what society thinks is right. It’s to give them the knowledge so they can make their own path and discover the own abilities.

Why is it that in school they teach us to be normal? To punish us for not coloring within the lines? I think this type of thought is wrong in the development of our future leaders. I don’t think the goal of life is to “be normal.” When did being mediocre ever accomplish anything? When was anything great ever been created by following the rules? Every single one of our great leaders weren’t normal by any means. They were all abnormal. All of our innovations, buildings, ideas, inventions and creations were built out of creativity and from folks who didn’t want to be normal. Can you imagine Trump or Edison being taught to “be normal?” I don’t think we should teach our kids to be such lemmings.

How did the current education system really work out for you? Did you become exactly what you dreamed about being right out of the gate? Did you follow your passions? Or did you sacrifice your dreams and settle for mediocrity? I ask you: what is normal anyway and why is that the goal we should all be striving for? Getting up every single day, heading out to a job you hate, working for people you hate that never appreciate your efforts? It that normal? Is this what we should strive for? Or was it when you went against the norm and stepped out that you found your passion?

I get up every single day excited about what I do. I absolutely love my work. Most of the entrepreneurs I know are the exact same way. I work with the most amazing achievers out there. Some nights I can’t sleep because my mind is racing with new ideas for the next day. Had I followed the norm, I wouldn’t have found my passion.

We have been orientated all of our lives. I think it’s time for a disorientation.

hospital bedNot too long ago, I spent a few hours visiting a friend at the hospital. I noticed how the doctors gave her a prescription to take elsewhere to fill. Why is it that doctors haven’t figured out to put a pharmacy right smack inside the hospital? All day long they are writing prescriptions, why not sell the medicine too? The customers are right there ready to buy them. In fact, it’s even a hassle for them to go elsewhere to fill it. Why don’t they have a pharmacy or even put in something like a redbox medicine vending machine? Makes absolutely no sense. Doctors are literally letting money skip right out the front door!

But what about you? What are you letting skip out the front door? I am amazed at the amount of businesses that do not expand their horizons and add additional services, products or upgrades to their core businesses. You have related services and products that your customers are seeking and currently buying from. Why not expand and cash in on that market too? Your customers already like, trust and have purchased from you. It’s an easy sale! So what could you do for your business? You find other services or products that relate to your business and create new revenue from them. Not sure where to begin?

Lets jump back to the hospital to show you an example. If I owned that place, I would have a pharmacy/store that the patients had to walk through in order to leave the building. I would make it to where it seemed silly or abnormal to go anywhere else to fill that prescription. I’d be selling food and entertainment in the waiting rooms for the family. I might even have a service that families could order delivery of food. What about something like itunes that patients could purchase their favorite TV shows or movies while they recovered in their hospital beds? They have to lay there anyway, why not bring entertainment to them? I would have different levels of treatment patients could purchase and upgrade to. Ever notice how some people will always opt for the most expensive package they can get? Perhaps there would be V.I.P hospital rooms that were well decorated and had personal service for extra fees. I would have rooms or beds families could purchase to stay near their ill family members so they didn’t have to go home. See it’s easy, once you start getting the creative juices flowing.

What additional products or services can you add to your business?

payment planWe live in a society that wants everything right now, this second. We want to lose the weight and become fit in just a few days with special magic pills. We want to buy a program on T.V. and become millionaires over night. We all want instant gratification. In my opinion, instant gratification is one of the leading causes of failure.

The truth is to become successful in anything you have to work for it and it will take time. You cannot hurry greatness. You have to constantly educate yourself, practice, take action and sculpt yourself if you want to achieve your goals. Millions of people will buy one of those ten step programs to wealth and never take it out of the shrink wrap. Then they turn around and blame the program for it not working. The real reason it didn’t work was themselves. They give up before they even get started. The price for success was to great to pay.

The industry giants did not start out making millions overnight. Facebook was started in a college dorm room. They worked hard and long hours and many even suffered for a long time before they made it to success. We see our stars and celebrities become overnight successes, but what we don’t see was the years of them struggling to find places that would give them the chance to display their craft. We don’t see the ridiculous deals just to put gas in the van to get to the next gig. We don’t see them living in cars and eating ramen noodles for weeks on end. Can you picture the Black Eyed Peas playing their music in a dive bar? You rarely see the struggle many of the famous and wealthy went through to achieve success. You only see the results.

Nature teaches us a valuable lesson about instant gratification: You work for it, or you starve. What you put into your success you will get out of it. To become a success you have to take action and put in your time and dedication. Would you be willing to work and sacrifice a few years to be able to be permanently lazy if you wanted? Is it really a sacrifice or is it an investment? There is no such thing as instant gratification in the path to success.

Sacrifice is the key to salvation Hazen Christensen (my business partner!)

If you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary. Jim Rohn

emergency brakeThe other day I was driving down the road and noticed my new Jeep wasn’t giving it all of its power. Something was holding it back. I pulled over to see what was going on to realize that I was driving with the emergency brake on.

Brilliant, Bustle.

It reminded me how many of us are like a car with the emergency brake on. We have allowed ourselves to let some outside force hold us back or keep us from giving it our full effort.

In order to fully go after what you want in life you have to let go of what is holding you back. You have to let go of the emergency brake and just go for it. Perhaps your past results are keeping you from giving it your all. Whatever it is, let it go and move forward. If you don’t let go of what binds you to the ground you will never be able to fly towards your goals.

When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.
– Lao Tzu

Some think it’s holding on that makes one strong; sometimes it’s letting go.
– Sylvia Robinson

Stand up and walk out of your history.
– Phil McGraw

The harder you fight to hold on to specific assumptions, the more likely there’s gold in letting go of them.
– John Seely Brown

Are you driving with the emergency brake on? Is something holding you back from going after your goals? Give up the excuses, and go for it.

Quoteworthy: Joss Whedon On Passion

http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/digg_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/reddit_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/stumbleupon_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/delicious_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/technorati_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/facebook_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/yahoobuzz_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/twitter_48.png

Joss WhedonI’m a pretty big Joss Whedon fan. I loved Buffy, was a huge fan of Firefly and now I enjoy Dollhouse when I get a break. I also like this quote by him about passion. Enjoy!

“Passion, it lies in all of us, sleeping… waiting… and though unwanted… unbidden… it will stir… open its jaws and howl. It speaks to us… guides us… passion rules us all, and we obey. What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love… the clarity of hatred… and the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion maybe we’d know some kind of peace… but we would be hollow… Empty rooms shuttered and dank. Without passion we’d be truly dead.” -Joss Whedon

horseracingToday marks opening day for Keeneland here in Lexington, KY. Time for people from all over to put on their best, grab drinks with friends and bet on race horses. It’s a blast.

It has always been interesting to me that a racehorse that runs a second faster than another horse can be worth millions more. 1 measly second can be the difference between millions and a few thousand. In business it can often work the same way. When you go the extra mile to better yourself or your business, it can make worlds of difference to your customers or towards your success. Be willing to dedicate yourself to push forward even if it is a small degree in order to become better. It can mean the difference between success and failure. What is something you can you do right now to go the extra mile?

Success does not wait. If I delay, she will become betrothed to another and lost to me forever. This is the time. This is the place and I am the man. –Og Mandino.

A Tip Of The Hat To Nielsen TV Ratings!

http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/digg_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/reddit_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/stumbleupon_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/delicious_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/technorati_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/facebook_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/yahoobuzz_48.png http://davidbustle.com/wp-content/plugins/sociofluid/images/twitter_48.png

Nielsen Tv Rating Direct MailHere is a picture I snapped of a direct mail kit from Nielsen TV ratings I got in the mail the other day. It had a few cool strategies I want to point out to help you in your direct mail campaigns. The most obvious are the two crisp dollars. This forces the reader to have a connection with the mail piece. The first connection is curiosity. They will ask why did they send me $2? This leads the reader to look at your direct mail more carefully. Most people check their mail over the trash can. You have an extremely short time to grab them by the throat and make them take a few more seconds to read your mail piece. Money can grab just about anyone’s attention. Now you don’t have to use money, you could use a number of things. The point is to be outrageous, different and attention grabbing. There is a really cool book on this by Bill Glazer, you can check it out here. The $2 also created another emotion: obligation. Unless you are greedy and heartless, most people are going to want to give something back in return for a gift, even if its just their attention. The $2 works well here. People are going to feel obligated to fill out the survey and return it. After all Nielsen sent $2 in advance for it (brave souls)!

The second strategy I want to point out is ease of response. The survey was short and had three ways to respond. You could either log in to their website, fill out the included paper survey (with envelope and stamp included), or call on the phone. If your marketing materials are not easy to respond to, they WILL NOT work. It’s like a billboard with nothing but a hard to remember phone number. Worthless.

I would have changed a few things about this mailing. I probably would have changed up the envelope to be a standard first class one instead of a branded one with Nielsen all over it. And most likely done some work with headlines and testimonials. Nonetheless, a great mail piece. A tip of the hat to you Nielsen! I’m curious to see your results!
